DLCA Informs Public of Market Basket Survey Results

The V.I. Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs informs consumers of its territory-wide Market Basket Survey findings, which were completed during the last week of October 2019. The Market Basket Survey is designed to inform consumers about which stores have the best prices on staple grocery items no matter the brand, according to a press release issued by Commissioner Richard T. Evangelista Esq.

The number of items compared on each island varies as a result of comparison guidelines that require items are identical in order to produce a valid survey. The surveys are included for comparative viewing.

On St. Croix, five stores were surveyed: Pueblo Golden Rock, Pueblo La Reine, Plaza Extra East, Plaza Extra West, and Stop and Shop Supermarket. A total of 23 of the same items were compared at each location. The difference between the highest and lowest-priced basket for October was $6.86. The lowest-priced family market basket was found at the Plaza Extra West location at $68.65. Stop and Shop Supermarket came in second with a market basket cost of $69.03; $.38 cents more than Plaza Extra West. Plaza Extra East came in third with a basket cost of $70.64. Pueblo La Reine came in fourth with $74.40. Pueblo Golden Rock was fifth with a market basket of 75.51.

On St. Thomas, four stores were surveyed: Plaza Extra, Food Center, and Pueblo Long Bay and Pueblo Sub Base. A total of 32 of the same items were compared at each location. The difference between the highest and lowest-priced basket was $41.08. The lowest priced family market basket was found at Plaza Extra with a cost of $67.36. Pueblo Long Bay location came in second with a market basket cost of $84.70. Plaza Extra East came in third with a basket cost of $88.51. Food Center came in fourth with a cost of $109.16.

On St. John, three stores were surveyed: Dolphin Market, STJ Market and Starfish Market. A total of 27 of the same items were compared at each location. The difference between the highest and lowest priced market basket was $26.83. The lowest priced family market basket was found at STJ Market with a cost of $69.64. Coming in second was Dolphin Market with a basket cost of $72.39. Starfish Market was third with a total market basket of $96.47.

Consumers are reminded to shop wisely and compare food prices to make the best economic choices.
