May 4, 2003 – This is national Historic Preservation Week and the start of the territory's observance of Virgin Islands Historic Preservation Month.
To mark both occasions, the Historic Preservation Office within the Planning and Natural Resources Department is hosting the first in a series of public presentations Wednesday on St. Thomas. It's both an exhibition — of a hundred of years of Virgin Islands and Caribbean postcard art — and a discussion of the social and cultural significance of postcard images.
"Glimpses of Images Past: A Collection of Virgin Islands and Caribbean Postcards 1900-2000" is the title of the exhibition and the presentation. The presenter is Leopold Griffith, a native Virgin Islander and a historic postcards collector and dealer.
"These rare historic postcard images, many of which are one of a kind, depict historic street scenes of our towns and landscapes, cultural and special events, people, churches and landmarks," a release states. "This postcard collection of historic images is one of the largest on the Virgin Islands."
The exhibition will be open to public viewing from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Wednesday and the discussion is set for 5:30 p.m. Both events will take place in the assembly room at Fort Christian Museum.
