June 9, 2002 Abandon St. Thomas for an evening Saturday, June 15, and transport yourself to Gay Paree for "Moulin Rouge: Une Soirée Française," the third annual cultural celebration of the American Red Cross, starting at 7:30 p.m. at the Ritz Carlton hotel.
Your ticket will not only provide a donation for local Red Cross funding, but also allow you to become a Frenchman or Frenchwoman for the evening. You can dress for it "dress to impress," say the invitations, and outfits such as cancan dancers or "dangereuses Chéries" are welcome.
The music will get you in the French spirit. The Moulin Dancers from the V.I. Institute for the Performing Arts, directed by Rose Maduro, will perform dance numbers from the "Moulin Rouge" movie soundtrack. Katherine Hintz of the Hintz Academy of Music will be musical director for the evening, and will be joined at the piano by Diana Matthews, flute, and Gabriela Haley, violin, for more music.
Jugglers and a magician will also entertain the guests.
The cuisine will be a "French Nuvox Buffet" catered by the executive chef of the Ritz Carlton and including French wines provided by Premier Wine and Spirits.
Tickets are $75 in advance and can be purchased by calling 774-0375, stopping by the American Red Cross office in Nisky Center, or at the Chamber of Commerce office. Cost will be $85 at the door.
Funds raised, said a release, will be used to support disasters in the region and social programs. Every dollar raised stays right here in our islands, where the Red Cross has been active for more than 80 years. The Red Cross motto, "We'll Be There," applies not only to large emergencies such as hurricanes or earthquakes, but for single-family fires, for assistance to military families, for lifesaving skills training.
