The U.S. Virgin Islands got a glowing reception at the 90th Annual NAACP convention, recently held in New York, acting Tourism Commissioner Monique Sibilly-Hodge said.
Several Caribbean islands, including the USVI, were invited to participate in the convention's Industrial Trade Show by American Airlines. A different island was feature each day of the convention, which ran from July 10-15.
"The U.S. Virgin Islands displayed our rich heritage of music and cultural dance," Hodge said in a released statement.
Frederiksted steelpan artist Victor Brady, moko jumbie dancer Kenneth "Nakim" Williams and Linet Harley participated in the exhibition.
The Westin St. John, the Sapphire Beach Resort, the Caravelle Hotel and Marriott's Frenchman's Reef gave away free hotel stays. American Airlines provided complementary air transportation to go along with the prize vacations.
"This event was a great platform to showcase the U.S. Virgin Islands and all it has to offer," Hodge said. "Entertainers from the Virgin Islands captured the crowd and many convention attendees commented on how beautiful the visuals and literature were.
"Many attendees expressed interest in visiting the islands in the near future," she said.
