Virgin Islands Energy News

April 11, 2008 – The following information and events are announced by the Virgin Islands Energy Office.
Federal Energy Officials Speaking in Frederiksted The Congressional Subcommittee on Insular Affairs and the Subcommittee on Energy and Mineral Resources will hold a hearing at 10 a.m., on Saturday, April 12, in the conference room of the Legislature of the Virgin Islands, St. Croix.
Energy issues facing the territory will be discussed and federal officials, local officials and alternative energy providers will testify. The public is invited to submit testimony for the record. The record will remain open until two weeks after the hearing date.
Invited local witnesses include: Usie Richards, president, V.I. Legislature; Bevan Smith, director, V.I. Energy Office; Hugo Hodge, executive director, V. I. Water and Power Authority; and Daryl Miller, president, St. Croix Alliance to Protect Utility Ratepayers. A panel of energy providers and a panel of federal officials will also testify.
Global Warming Discussions Offered
The V.I. Energy Office is offering a presentation on global warming to community organizations. In March, the Energy Office joined with the Water and Power Authority to kick off an effort to educate residents about the environmental affects of the continual use of fossil fuels to produce energy. The effort began with showings of the movie "An Inconvenient Truth" and the presentation of a slide show by a representative of Al Gore.
The current presentation is based on one given by Joseph S. Levine on St. Croix in February. Levine taught at Boston College before turning to science writing for magazines like Smithsonian and GEO. Listen in on Fishy Conversations
Although most of us live on islands and sea life is all around us, very few of us have heard what fish have to say for their selves.
Scientists have learned that there is quite a bit of audio communication going on in the ocean. Now, through the wonder of the Internet, human beings can listen to some of those underwater sounds.

Solar Car Races Set for May 2
The Thirteenth Annual Junior Solar Sprint Competition has been rescheduled for May 2 at the Wendy's Restaurant South parking lot in the Sunny Isle Shopping Center.
The race, which was originally scheduled for April 4, will begin at 9 a.m. The event had to be postponed because of the threat of high seas.
