DPW Provides Update on Traffic Changes at Christiansted Bypass

Drawing depicting the traffic flow at the Christiansted Bypass Project. There will be changes to the traffic flow at the western end of the Christiansted Bypass Project at its connection with Contentment Road, according to a press release from the Department of Public Works on behalf of the contractor, Better Roads Inc.

According to the plan, eastbound and westbound traffic will utilize the western end of the Christiansted Bypass at the old Contentment Road at Intersection 1. Eastbound traffic will proceed via the left turn lane to the old Contentment Road then to the intersection at Bassin Triangle and beyond. Westbound traffic should access the Christiansted Bypass at Intersection 1 and then proceed right along the Christiansted Bypass/Contentment Road in a westerly direction.

The proposed change to the traffic pattern completes the construction of the tie-in for the third and next to final phase of the project.

Better Roads Inc. is presently one step closer to the final contract, which ultimately will lead to the final completion of the entire Christiansted Bypass. After many years of planning and three years of construction, the culmination of this most important and impressive project will finally be realized.

At Intersection 1, provisions will also be made for motorists wishing to access the community to the south of the bypass for traffic due east and west.

This modified flow of traffic will be in effect from the week beginning July 4 and will remain in effect until the end of the final Contract 4 when the Christiansted Bypass will be fully operational and opened to traffic. The final contract will be publicly advertised within the next 45 days after which the DPW anticipates final completion within the next 12 months.

Motorists and other road users are asked to exercise caution, pay particular attention to the traffic signs that are posted, and to reduce speed when negotiating through this intersection.
