Governor John P. deJongh Jr. has proclaimed July 7-14, as French Heritage Week in the Virgin Islands to celebrate the important contributions made in the territory by residents of French heritage
French Heritage Week culminates on Bastille Day, one of France’s most important holidays, celebrated on July 14. On this occasion, French people around the world commemorate the storming and destruction of the Bastille prison on that day in 1789, an act that triggered the French Revolution. Bravery in the face of tyranny resulted in the establishment of a Republic and won freedom for many French citizens.
In the Virgin Islands, descendants of French settlers living on St. Thomas have lent their vast expertise in the areas of fishing, farming, and other professions and vocations. They have also made significant contributions to the political, economic, social and cultural progress of the territory. During this designated week, Virgin Islanders proudly recognize these many achievements in celebration of our community’s diversity and greatness.
The Virgin Islands Legislature and many community organizations recognize the affection and respect of all Virgin Islanders for their brothers and sisters of French descent. On St. Thomas, several events celebrate French Heritage Week.
The Northside Sportfishing Club’s 23rd Annual Bastille Day Kingfish Tournament will be held on Sunday, July 10, at Hull Bay Hideaway. The festivities will include live bands, a beach party, and local food for sale. Cool Sessions Band will play after the fishing competition, and proceeds from the event will go to community organizations to help provide college scholarships.
On Tuesday, July 12, at 6 p.m. a reception will be held at the Emerald Beach Hotel by Honorary French Consul of the U.S. Virgin Islands, Odile de Lyrot. On Thursday, July 14, a Bastille Day celebration will fill Frenchtown with traditional music, dancing, and plenty of local foods.
Governor deJongh invites all Virgin Islanders to observe Bastille Day and French Heritage Week by attending those events taking place across St. Thomas.
