Fall Clay Classes at CMCArts Scheduled

The following courses are being offered at the Caribbean Museum Center for the Arts.

Wheel Throwing
Tuesday and Thursday mornings – 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Six classes: Oct. 2, 4, 9, 11, 16, 23
$200 includes clay; firing fees based on size of pieces created
Students will learn the basics of throwing pots on the potter’s wheel. Pots will then be glazed for functional usage.
Adult Handbuilding
Wednesday mornings – 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
Seven classes: Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24, 31, Nov. 7, 14
$175 includes clay; firing fees based on size of pieces created
Basic techniques of creating clay pots will be taught – pinch, coil, slab. Projects are flexible, and students are encouraged to be creative and will be assisted in bringing their personal ideas to form.
Colored Clay Forms
Wednesday evenings – 6-8 p.m.
Four classes: Oct. 3, 10, 17, 24
$110 includes clay; firing fees based on size of pieces created
Students will create colored patterns in blocks (a process called “nerikomi”) which will then be used as inlay or to make whole slabs of clay to drape over forms. Each pattern is unique to the maker. Previous experience with clay is preferable, but not required.
Make a Moko Jumby
Tuesday evenings – 6-8 p.m.
Four classes: Nov. 13, 20, 27, Dec. 4
$120 includes clay and firing
Each student will create his/her own colorful clay moko jumby just in time for Carnival. Moko jumbies will then be attached to student supplied wood pieces for wall hanging. Previous clay experience preferred but not required.
