Known to his friends and family as "Mike," Vernon Darrell Acree Jr. died on Feb. 1 in Fairfax, Virginia. Born June 25, 1919, in Washington, D.C., he was the eldest son of the late Vernon Darrell Acree and Elizabeth Penny Acree. On April 3, 1938, in Washington, D.C., he married the former Doris E. Wight, who survives.
Mr. Acree served in the United States Army during World War II and worked for over 40 years in many capacities within the United States government, including assistant commissioner at the Internal Revenue Service where he assisted with implementing the U.S. Tax Code in the U.S. Virgin Islands and more recently as the commissioner of the U.S. Customs Service from 1972-1977. He later owned and operated a consulting business and a restaurant in Fairfax, Virginia.
Besides his parents, Mike was preceded in death by one sister and two brothers. Survivors include his loving wife of almost 75 years, Doris Acree of Gainesville, Virginia; four children: V. Darrell Acree and his wife Carol of Washington, D.C.; Allan L. Acree and his wife Carol of Potomac, Maryland; Jean Winters of Gainesville, Virginia; and M. Elizabeth Ives and her husband Leon of Raleigh, North Carolina; one sister, Marie Olson and her husband David of Idaho Falls, Idaho; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 8, at the Baker-Post Funeral Home & Cremation Center, 10001 Nokesville Road, Manassas, Virginia. A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 9, at Holy Trinity Catholic Church, 8713 Linton Hall Road, Gainesville, Virginia, with Rev. Thomas Yehl as the celebrant.
Private interment will take place on Monday, Feb. 11, at Stonewall Memory Gardens, Manassas, Virginia.
