Bovoni Housing Community has been invited to apply for a $175,000 weed and seed grant from the federal government.
Weed and Seed is a federal program that seeks to weed out violent crime, gang activity, drug use and drug trafficking in neighborhoods through the joint efforts of local and federal law enforcement agencies, criminal justice agencies and existing programs. The community is then seeded with
social and economic revitalization efforts.
The grant money will be used in part to operate and enhance Bovoni's Safe Haven, a multi-service center.
Safe Haven provides a variety of services to help residents develop healthy relationships and improve their skills.
The executive office of Weed and Seed will hold a grant-writing seminar in Mobile, Ala., on March 1 and 2 for all sites applying for the grants. The seminar will help new sites prepare their applications, which must be submitted by March 31.
