The V.I. government needs to regulate "gypsy taxis," Sen. George Goodwin said Wednesday, noting the recent shooting at Coki Beach was an example of the problems caused by their illegal operation.
In a letter to Gov. Charles Turnbull, Goodwin said the unlicensed taxis are operating in violation of the law. He acknowledged that they fill a transportation void, but said law enforcement agencies must find a way to regulate their operation.
The shooting at Coki Point on Jan. 29 was the result of a dispute between two taxi drivers — one licensed, one not — over passengers.
It occurred in full view of visitors and others at the popular tourist attraction.
The penalty for operating an illegal taxi is a $500 fine and/or six months in jail.
