LIAT Airlines has deferred salaries of all employees for two weeks, according to acting CEO Osmond Lake, and this could lead to a job action as early as Friday.
St. Thomas employees of Leeward Islands Air Transport are protected by V.I. labor laws and have been paid, according to Thursday's Daily News. But if LIAT employees in St. Maarten strike, it could halt the two daily flights between St. Thomas and St. Maarten.
The Daily News says the salary deferment caused the St. Maarten union representing the employees to issue a strike threat for Friday afternoon. BLP union president Claudio Buncamper said the LIAT employees in St. Maarten were unwilling to wait until March 16 for their February pay.
LIAT officials, in an attempt to defer any strike action, have invited union leaders to a meeting on Antigua for discussions, the Daily News said.
