GUN AMNESTY DAY NETS ONE HANDGUN

0

Saturday was Gun Amnesty Day in St. Thomas. Programs were held, speeches were made, music was played and cash rewards were offered.
But only one handgun was turned in.
Nevertheless, organizers said the day was a success, Sunday's V.I. Independent reported, because they got their message out.
The paper quotes Brenda Mason of the Police Department's firearms bureau as saying she expects a lot of calls starting Monday morning from people who heard about the amnesty and want to turn illegal guns in.
The program offers $75 for handguns and $50 for long guns such as rifles and shotguns. The money was contributed by local businesses.
For more information call the Police Department at 774-2211.
