The Department of Planning and Natural Resources Environmental Enforcement Division advises commercial fishermen and the general public that the harvesting of whelks in local waters is prohibited during the closed season which runs from April 1 through Sept. 30.
The purpose is to allow the declining resources the opportunity for reproduction during their spawning periods.
