Under criticism by St. Croix senators that he was not committed to promoting St. Croix, Clement "Cain" Magras' nomination for Tourism commissioner was rejected Thursday. All St. Croix senators and at-large Sen. Almando "Rocky" Liburd voted not to confirm Magras.
Magras had also been under fire due to sexual harassment charges lodged against him by longtime Tourism employee Heather Carty.
Carty filed charges in April after Magras was approved by the Rules Committee but before the full Senate voted on his nomination.
Earlier this week Carty again filed charges with the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission against Magras, alleging that since filing the sexual harassment claim, her job duties and responsibilities have been removed and she has been assigned to sitting at a booth at the airport, has been harassed by other employees and has been slandered by Magras.
She also charged that Attorney General Iver Stridiron falsely reported to the governor that his investigation did not support charges of sexual harassment.
Carty's lawyer, Lee Rohn, told Radio One News earlier this week that Stridiron had "doctored" the report to the governor.
In the new filing with EEOC, Carty claimed the governor knew that the investigation did support her allegations of sexual harassment and in continuing to support the nomination, the governor was approving Magras' behavior.
In her original sexual harassment charges against Magras, Carty alleged that on Feb. 5 Magras invited her into his hotel room "ostensibly" to answer a phone call and then threw her down on the bed where he "tried to put his hands beneath my clothes, tried to kiss me, fondle me and requested I have sex with him."
