GOVERNMENT GETS GEORGES INSURANCE CHECKS

A month into this year's hurricane season, the V.I. government received about $737,000 in Hurricane Georges insurance settlement checks.
The money will be used to repair government property damaged by last September's storm and "contribute to our continued recovery effort," Gov. Charles Turnbull said in a statement released Monday from Government House
The checks, issued by Houston Casualty Co., Marshall & Sterling on behalf of Lloyd's, and General Star Indemnity, were forwarded to Turnbull last week by V.I. Attorney General-Designate Iver Stridiron, who negotiated the claims.
"Because of the rather modest damages to government property caused by Georges, this settlement represents a fair adjustment of the government's claim by the insurance companies involved," Stridiron said in the statement.
"I would like to congratulate all government personnel who worked on the claim for bringing this to a speedy conclusion," Stridiron added. "I am sure this money will contribute to our continued recovery effort."
The checks have now been sent to the V.I. Finance Departmentfor proper disbursement, the statement said.
