Surgeon General Dr. David Satcher's initiative to reduce teen suicide has garnered the support of V.I. Delegate to Congress Donna Christian-Christensen.
Satcher's Call to Action introduces a blueprint for addressing suicide – Awareness, Intervention, and Methodology (AIM). AIM includes 15 key recommendations that suggest preventing suicide and injuries from suicidal behaviors by addressing the problems of undetected and under treated mental and substance abuse disorders in conjunction with other public health approaches.
"I have stated before and will continue to stress that to effectively deal with mental illness, we have to put the whole person back together, in concept, in practice and in coverage," said Christensen, a participant in last month's White House Conference on Mental Health.
"We all must learn to recognize the signs that may drive our children to take their own lives and come together as a society to preserve our future. I applaud Surgeon General Satcher and Mrs. (Tipper) Gore for their active role in bringing this and other mental health issues to the forefront," Christensen concluded.
