A robbery at a neighborhood restaurant Thursday night resulted in the death of one of the patrons.
Police said Thomas "Randy" Lusby, 60, of Upper Mahogany Run was shot to death when he struggled with two robbers who stormed the Toad and Tart Pub in Smith Bay at about 8 p.m.
Lusby, shot once in the upper left chest, was pronounced dead at Roy L. Schneider Hospital at about 9:38 p.m., police said.
The robbers took a few hundred dollars from the establishment's cash register and from patrons in the pub, according to Radio One.
The victim was reportedly having dinner with his wife at the restaurant when the robbery and shooting occurred.
According to police, the robbers were black males wearing bandanas over their faces and carrying handguns. One was described as about 5'6" and the other, 5'9." The shorter of the two shot Lusby, police said.
The homicide is the ninth for St. Thomas this year and the 15th for the territory.
Anna Clarke, owner of the Toad and Tart, called Sam Topp's radio call-in show Thursday morning to voice distress over the shooting death, calling Lusby a friend. And thanking the community for its support, Clarke said she will keep the pub open rather than allow criminals to close her down.
