An exciting and eclectic exhibition of prints, maps and paintings will be on display Sunday at Haagensen House on Government Hill where Michael Paiewonsky of MAPesMONDe is conducting a sale of his rare and unusual Caribbean collection.
"W e will have between 250 and 300 pieces covering a wide range of tastes," Paiewonsky said. "There will be everything from a butterfly print for $45 to an oil painting by internationally known St. Thomas artist Camille Pissarro for $200,000."
Paiewonsky started his personal collection in the 1950s for display in his grandfather's landmark store, the venerable A. H. Riise on Main Street.
Over more than 40 years, Paiewonsky has amassed a wide assortment of Caribbean treasures. His maps range from the Virgin Islands and other parts of the Caribbean through North and South America and world views, some dating back to 1690. Also included will be the Lucas Palermo Botanical serigraphs (silk screens).
The actual sale will be from 2 to 6 p.m. However everything will be on display for viewing from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Schoolteachers and children are especially urged to come and see the "rare and unusual" treasures. "Amateur photographers are also encouraged," Paiewonsky said. Also available will be maps from as far back as 1750 for as little as $85.
Haagensen House Museum will receive 10 percent of the proceeds, and Paiewonsky expressed a wish that some of the buyers would donate their purchases to Haagensen House for permanent display.
Bring your walking shoes to the exhibit. Haagensen House is at the top of the "99 stairs" on Government hill.
