A 28-year-old man remains in critical condition at Gov. Juan F. Luis Hospital Tuesday afternoon after being shot in the head as he drove his truck through the Ralph de Chabert housing community Monday morning.
At 9:42 a.m. Monday, police received a 911 call about shots fired near Building 6 in the de Chabert area, said Acting Police Chief Novelle Francis in a release. Once there, police discovered Gary Mason, 28, with a gunshot wound to his head and two in his back.
After being shot, Mason’s truck veered off the road into a tree, Francis said.
Francis said Mason had been arrested last Wednesday for wounding his wife and child with a shotgun. According to Francis, after Mason and his wife Rosemary had an argument, Gary Mason fired a shot gun at his wife, who was holding the couple’s 11-month-old daughter.
"One of the shotgun pellets struck the 11-month-old daughter who was in the mother’s arms," Francis said.
The child was wounded in the arm and Rosemary Mason was wounded in the foot.
Francis said investigators are looking into the possibility that the shooting of Gary Mason on Monday may have been done in retaliation.
"We don’t see any connection," Francis said Tuesday. "But we’re not ruling it out."
Francis said that Gary Mason had surgery on Monday night and is still on life support.
