MARKET BASKET SURVEY SHOWS WHO HAS CHEAPEST GROCERIES

On St. Thomas, out of 31 items surveyed by the Department of Licensing and Consumer Affairs, Plaza Extra reported the lowest price — $75.19 followed by Pueblo in Subbase at $79.37 .
Of 44 items surveyed on St. Croix, Sunshine Supermarket came in with the lowest price.
Sunshine carried a price tag of $117.90 for the 44 items compared to Plaza Extra’’s $121.71 and Pueblo’’s $128.70.
. DCLA officials say savings can be realized if people shop around. They said a pound of Land-O-Lakes butter goes for $3.69 at Sunshine, $4.79 at Plaza Extra and $5.59 at Pueblo in Golden Rock.
On St. Thomas Plaza Extra sells a half-gallon of St. Thomas Dairies ice cream for $4.99 while Pueblo’’s price is a $1.40 more expensive.
DCLA Commissioner Andrew Rutnik said shoppers should use coupons and specials to save money.
