St. Croix beaches suffered significant erosion and contamination as the result of Hurricane Lenny, according to Dean Plaskett, commissioner of Planning and Natural Resources.
He said the department of coastal zone management would be in St. Croix Monday to complete its assessment of the situation, and that the department of housing, parks and recreation is working on reducing the sand at Fredricksted Beach, where Lenny hit the hardest.
In addition to this work, the commissioner said, his department is allowing Public Works to wash the sand off Strand Street in Frederiksted.
Plaskett advised the public that water quality analyses taken on Nov. 20 indicate that the following beaches and coastal areas are unsafe for swimming or other recreational activities:
Altona Lagoon
Christiansted Wharf
Club St. Croix
Cormorant Beach
Hibiscus Beach
Mill Harbor Condominiums
Rainbow Beach
Water Gut Homes.
