Around this time of year, Virgin Islanders look for music to send away to relatives to give a little taste of home. The local Christmas music makes a good gift and is something they won’’t find in record stores abroad.
The Rising Stars, Christmas Concert Live, features the enormous sound of a full steel orchestra.
Songs include, Winter Wonderland, There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays, Have Yourself a Merry Little Chrtistmas.
On a more mellow note, Steel Pan Christmas with Mighty Whitey presents steel band and vocal versions of Guava Berry, Green Christmas, Silent Night, and I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus.
The Starlites, One Christmas Morning, features a wide variety of music and performers from the Eudora Kean High School Choir doing Handel’’s Hallelujah Chorus to Jamsie doing the Guava Berry song to Lorna Freeman doing the Christmas Song.
Of course everybody is a scratch band fan at Christmas time and the best Quelbe Christmas music is by Stanley and the Ten Sleepless Knights. TSK has 3 excellent Christmas albums. # 1 features the 12 days of Christmas Crucian style. #2 has Don’’t Stop the Serendade. #3 has I Want a Piece of Pork. TSK also backs up the Mighty Groover on his album Have a Medley Christmas.
On the spiritual side, King Obstinate has just released A Christmas Blessing . This album features traditional and original songs in a gospel vein, but with a good Calypso beat.
Nothing brings the feeling of home to relatives in the cold north like the warm Christmas music of the Virgin Islands.
