ELENA CHRISTIAN TO REOPEN TO DOUBLE SESSIONS

The Elena Christian Junior High School on St. Croix will reopen Monday
but students will face classes in double session.
The double sessions were required to allow contractors to complete emergency repair work to many classrooms and other facilities at the school. Elena Christiant was shut down last month after a series of teacher and student protests over conditions at the school.
The decision to reopen the junior high school came Sunday afternoon after
Education Commissioner Ruby Simmonds, Principal Caroline Brown and other officials toured the campus to review the work that has been done at the school.
"We did our final walk through today and we approved the work that has been done to date," Simmonds said Sunday. She praised the workers who have done
a herculean task in readying the school for reopening Monday.
Brown said the seventh graders will report to classes in the morning while the eighth graders report in the afternoon. Both groups of students will share a common lunch period.
"The faculty for the morning session is expected to arrive by 7:05 a.m., the afternoon faculty should be on campus by 12:20 p.m.." The seventh grade students will be in classes from 7:20 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Brown explained, with the older students in class from 12:45 pm to 5:30 pm.
Simmonds asked parents to bear with the Education Department through this period of double sessions as "this is the best way that we can provide an educational opportunity for these children."
The commissioner also announced on Sunday that bus service will be provided only for the students attending the morning session, "the afternoon students will have to get their own way " and parents are asked to assist in getting the students to school in the afternoon and picking the students up at 5:30 p.m. She said it is a problem that should be resolved by Tuesday.
