An 8-week Expressive Art Therapy Practicum for children with disabilities, sponsored by the Virgin Island Resource Center for the Disabled in conjunction with the University of Louisville, Kentucky, is currently available.
The course will be taught by Jennifer George, a graduate student at the UL expressive therapies department, and supervised by Wayne Ramirez, art therapist for the VIRCD. Ramirez has an extensive background in art therapy both in the Caribbean, and on the mainland. He was the first president of the Wisconsin Art Therapy Association, the oldest in the nation.
George is looking forward to the course because of "the island's diverse cultural setting." She will be conducting research for her Master's Degree project of increasing the self-esteem and positive body image of children with disabilities.
A similar program was conducted successfully last year at the VIRCD by Laura A. Cherry, an assistant professor at UL, who arranged for this year's program.
To join the program, for which there is no charge, call the Center at (340) 777-2253 for an application or visit. To reach contact persons for the sponsoring agency, MaryAnn Ramirez or Carolyn Smith, call (340) 777-2253.
