Gov. Charles W. Turnbull is in Washington, D.C. attending the national Governors' Conference to be held from Saturday through Tuesday.
Highlighting the social segment of the governor's trip is a White House dinner with President Clinton, a reception hosted by the Ambassador to China, and another by Vice-President Gore.
The focus of the conference is the question of how states and territories can prosper in the new economy of the 21st century.
The governor will meet with several members of Congress to discuss current Virgin Islands initiatives and will hold discussions with the Interior Department regarding the territory's list of critical needs.
Gov. Turnbull serves on several committees of the Conference, including Human Services, Natural Resources and Economic Development and Commerce.
During his absence, Lt. Governor Gerard Luz James II will be acting governor.
