Sporting some of the best comedic talent in all of filmdom, you'd think Hanging Up would have you rolling in the aisles, but, alas, that's not exactly what the critics are saying.
Not that it's not worth a look see. Directed by and starring Diane Keaton, written by Delia Ephron, with the screenplay by her and her immensely talented sister, Nora Ephron (Heartburn, When Harry Met Sally), and with Meg Ryan, Lisa Kudrow, Walter Matthau and Adam Arkin, it's got to be good, no matter the critics.
But . . . perhaps it's the cell phones. The three starring sisters spend most of the movie communicating on the devices, discussing problems with their aging and dotty father, Matthau.
Ryan is at center stage, as usual, as an L.A. event planner trying to juggle her job and family problems with her sisters, Keaton, a glamorous New York magazine editor, and Kudrow a flighty soap opera actress.
Matthau, in his better moments after a high-flying life, is threatening to die, a threat which gets his daughters' attention. Whether it's enough to engage your attention who knows, but, then again, it's just got to be good.
It is rated PG-13 for language and some sex related material.
