The Antillean Women Strikers defeated the Queen Upsetters 3-0 in the spring opening game of the St. Thomas Women's Soccer Association Sunday.
All three goals of the game, which was played at the University of the Virgin Islands field, were scored by newcomer Lorraine Charles.
The St. John Wolfpack and the Ivana Eudora Kean High School Rays make up the other two teams of the spring league, which is scheduled to be approximately four weeks long. The games, all played on weekends, will be either at the UVI field or the Coral Bay field on St. John, according to Camille Mckayle Stolz, president of the association.
Stolz, who is very enthusiastic about the small but growing league, said "It's proof that we (the association), are going in the right direction."
This is the second league of the 1999-2000 season, and there are many new players. Stolz said that the mix of the new players, many of them high school students, and the more experienced players, gives the game an "exciting challenge." She said the league is considered "developmental," as it gives exposure to all players regardless of skill level.
Interested high school students and others with an eye toward soccer can come to the UVI field practices on Wednesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m., or to the games Saturdays at 4 p.m.
The next game is Saturday, March 25 at 4 p.m. between the St. John Wolfpack and the Antillean Strikers at the UVI field.
