Bermuda’s Under-15 national soccer team topped the U.S. Virgin Islands 4-0 last Sunday in Hamilton.
The game was played on a cold night — in the 50s — on a field much softer than the one the V.I. is accustomed to. In the first half, Bermuda’s first goal was accidentally put in by a V.I. defensive player. The second goal was a clean, quick shot one minute before the half ended.
Bermuda kept its position, played strategically and controlled the entire game. The home team kept the pressure on, taking close to 50 shots on goal. But they were frustrated by the outstanding performance of the V.I. goalkeeper, Moses Morales. He single-handedly stopped at least 15 goals and challenged Bermuda outside with tremendous catches. If there was a most valuable player for both sides, Moses had no competition.
Before the match, V.I. coach Daryl Rogers told his players, "I have instructed you as a coach, a father and a friend. You have come to represent the Virgin Islands. Talk. Soccer is a game of communication. Support each other. Follow the instruction of your captain, Frank Robinson. Give it your all."
The thrill of victory was Bermuda’s but the V.I. Under-15 team resolved to come back strong, intelligent and with heart to beat Bermuda at home next month.
