PAN PLAYING COMES FIRST IN THIS SUMMER CAMP

St. John youngsters who want to learn to play steelpan, or who have a little experience and would like to get some more, have an opportunity to do so for five to seven weeks this summer, at the Love City Pan Dragons Youth Steel Orchestra summer camp.
Scheduled from June 26 to July 29, with an optional two weeks after that, the camp will take place at the St. John Youth Center in Cruz Bay. It's open to all St. John young people, beginners and experienced, according to parent coordinator Elaine Penn. "We usually start at 6 years, and 13 is usually about the upper age, but we're flexible," she said.
The camp, which will include steelpan classes and lessons, other activities and field trips, will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays. For one child, the fee is $60 for the five-week session, including materials, breakfast, lunch, snacks and insurance but not field trip expenses. For the optional two weeks at the start of August, the cost is $25 per week. If two or more siblings are enrolled, these fees drop to $55 and $20 per child, respectively.
The Education Department is providing the breakfasts, lunches and snacks.
Camp registration will be held at the Youth Center on Wednesday and Thursday, June 7 and 8, from 4 to 6 p.m. For more information, call Karen Matthew at 693-9160 or Penn at 693-8807.
