The Licensing and Consumer Affairs Department distributed a press release Friday warning the public to beware of unsolicited e-mail messages promising recipients huge amounts of money but asking for their personal bank account information in order to effect the promised deal.
The department received a complaint from a resident who received an e-mail from a sender claiming to be a Nigerian official that made such a promise in return for such information, the release said. Whether such solicitations come via e-mail, fax or postal service, the release stated, "please recognize that this is fraud. Consumers are asked to be [wary] of all solicitations requesting financial information and Social Security numbers."
Anyone wanting further information should call the LCA consumer protection services director, Alli Paul, at 773-2226.
