POLICE RECOVER SUSPICIOUS LOOT

Virgin Islands police investigators Monday will begin identifying items recovered from a shack in Smith Bay on Saturday afternoon to try to determine if any are stolen property.
Law enforcement sources said this weekend that officers from the Zone C Command in Four Winds were responding around midday Saturday to reports of shots fired in the Smith Bay area when they came across the shanty and its seven occupants.
Items recovered included electronics, jewelry, two safes and a firearm. The weapon was found on a man who claimed ownership of the gun. He was arrested and charged with possession of an unlicensed firearm, according to the source.
The big-ticket items were turned over to police investigators who will follow up with victims of recent burglaries in the area. The six other occupants of the shanty could face charges if police are able to determine that the recovered goods were stolen.
The source said the two safes apparently were cast aside after they could not be opened.
VIPD officials did not comment on the find over the weekend.
Anyone with information on recent burglaries or robberies in the Smith Bay area of St. Thomas should contact police at 774-4050 or the emergency number 911 to describe some of the goods stolen during those incidents.
