It has certainly felt a little hurricane-like over the past few days, but rumors of a tropical storm hitting the Virgin Islands are untrue, according to local forecasters.
No tropical storm watches or warnings have been posted for the area. According to the National Weather Service office in San Juan, Puerto Rico, a strong anticyclone northeast of the Leeward Islands is helping to create higher than usual easterly winds.
An anticyclone is a usually broad wind system rotating clockwise around a high pressure center; it is not a tropical storm or cyclone, a tightly packed wind system rotating counterclockwise around a low pressure cell.
The weather service calls for moisture-laden east winds of 15 to 20 miles per hour to bring rain showers off and on to the Virgin Islands through Wednesday, with gusty winds around rain activity. High temperatures will be around 85 degrees with lows around 75.
Seas remain fairly high, though, with near shore seas of 8 feet and offshore seas of 9 to 11 feet in east swells.
