TURNBULL VETOES BILL LETTING VENDORS RETURN

0

After the District Court's ruling concerning Drake's Seat vendors Friday, Gov. Charles W. Turnbull weighed in, vetoing a bill that would have allowed vendors to keep selling wares at the popular overlook.
"Today the District Court has ruled that there is no legal basis of which it is aware for the continuation of an injunction preventing the Government from enforcing the general laws applicable to all vendors," Turnbull said in a letter addressed to Senate President Almando "Rocky" Liburd.
"While I am sympathetic to the needs of the vendors, the needs of the larger community and the laws applicable thereto must prevail," he said.
The bill, passed in the waning days of the 23rd Legislature, would have allowed vendors to use the site for 10 years and then apply for an extension.
