April 9, 2001 Omari Williams and Brittany Rodriquez are the 2001 Prince and Princess for Virgin Islands Carnival. They emerged from a field of three couples to secure the title Sunday night in competition at the Lionel Roberts Stadium. The show, which attracted a crowd of more than 4,000 spectators, friends and supporters of the contestants, got off to a slow start
as late afternoon intermittent rain showers attempted to put a damper on things.
The show was also delayed by some technical glitches that had to be overcome.
The three couples: Williams and Rodriquez; Jonelle-Alexis Jackson and Chamoi Frazer; and Ceciley Fahie and Akeem Forbes maintained their composure as they moved from segment to segment despite the technical problems popping up here and there.
At the end of the night, couple No.1, Williams and Rodriquez, walked away with the title.
Because there were only three couples competing, the Carnival Committee opted not to name a first or second runner-up. The awards presentation, which preceded the announcement of the winner, made it clear that none of the three couples had stolen the show outright. The awards were divided equally amongst the couples. They included: Most Cooperative Prince Omari Williams.
Most Cooperative Princess Ceciley Fahie
Most Photogenic Couple Jonelle-Alexis Jackson and Chamoi Frazer
Best Talent Award Ceciley Fahie and Akeem Forbes
Mister Intellect Omari Williams
Miss Intellect Brittany Rodriquez
Best Evening Wear Jonelle-Alexis Jackson and Chamoi Frazer
The 2001 Carnival prince and princess will be crowned along with the Carnival Queen, who will be selected on Saturday night, on Sunday, April 22 at the Emancipation Garden.
The month-long Carnival celebration kicked off officially on Saturday night with the Caribbean Music Night which showcased four bands: Inner Vision of St. John; Imaginations Brass of St. Thomas; Krosfyah from Barbados and Dominica's WCK.
