May 11, 2001- The newly established Gateway Planning Council is seeking ideas for beautification projects in Cruz Bay, on either public or private lands. Proposed projects will be considered as part of the council's efforts to improve the town's appearance as a first step in planning for the community's future.
The types of projects being sought could involve landscaping, signage, "pocket parks" (small areas of green space) and cleanups. Funding for projects on public lands will be sought from the Anti-Litter and Beautification Commission, the Keep America Beautiful/Great American Cleanup Program and other sources. Private-property projects will be pursued in cooperation with the property owners and funded through private contributions.
The Gateway Planning Council was created in April by joint agreement of the St. John administrator, Julien Harley, and the V.I. National Park superintendent, John King, to advise and assist the territory and the park in planning cooperatively to improve of downtown Cruz Bay as a gateway community to the park. Establishing a town beautification program is among the council's key initial tasks.
Individuals and businesses may submit proposals in writing to the Gateway Planning Committee, Office of the Governor, P.O. Box 488 The Battery, St. John VI 00831. Public acknowledgement will be given to all parties involved in proposing, developing and funding projects.
