Mountain bike racers from the Virgin Islands, Jamaica, Antigua, Nevis, the British Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico will duel it out over the hills of St. Croixs lush west end on Saturday.
The race is the third leg of the Caribbean Cup Mountain Bike Series and is being hosted by the V.I. Cycling Federation. The main event is the cross-country race, which starts at 8 a.m. Saturday.
Riders will start at Camp Mount Victory on Creque Dam Road and then turn north into the lush hills above the Rainforest. The four-mile course loops through challenging terrain, with expert-class racers taking on five laps.
Favorites include St. Croixs Jamie Keys, the V.I. national champion. Keys is also leading the Caribbean Cup, with victories last month in the BVI and in March on Nevis.
Set to challenge Keys, however, is Jose Prado, who recently beat Puerto Ricos national mountain biking champ.
Following the cross country race at 2 p.m. will be a downhill time trial. Racers will test their limits on a fast downhill run that starts at Bodkin Mill and finishes at the top of Annaly Bay.
