June 8, 2001 Fund raising is going to the dogs at Skinny Legs in Coral Bay Sunday afternoon - by way of the first Wag-a-Palooza Island Dog Show.
"It's a fun event that runs from 1 to 4 p.m." with proceeds to benefit St. John's Animal Care Center, Joe Palminteri, one of the organizers, said.
According to Palminteri, competition will be in five categories. Dogs will:
– Compete for "best coconut retriever."
– Compete with their owners for "most look-alike."
– Be judged on "non-obedience."
– Be judged on "best costume."
– Be divided into subcategories of small, medium and large to vie in 30 seconds each for "best pet routine."
In addition to prizes for the winners in each category, there will be a Best In Show award. Judging will be by Dr. Laura Palminteri, Jeff Donnelly and Engil, who runs the Animal Care Center.
The dog entry fee is $10 in advance or $15 on Sunday. Admission to humans, with or without dogs, is free.
Further funds for the center will be raised through the sale of T-shirts and a raffle of prizes including American Airlines tickets for two to anywhere in the world, a weekend for two at the Lindholm Estate with champagne and dinner at Asolare, a weekend at the Westin Resort, a weekend at Concordia, and dinner at the Caneel Bay Sugar Mill.
All proceeds will help to support the Animal Care Center. For more information, call 693-5900 or 693-7780.
