PLANET OF THE APES MEETS PLANET HOLLYWOOD

Aug. 3, 2001 – Imagine it's 1968 and you're happily munching popcorn while Charlton Heston and Kim Hunter swing around the tree tops in the maiden "Planet of the Apes."
Well, it's not 1968, and this ain't Kansas, Toto. This new remake of the cult classic won't make you want to swing from the tree tops, so say most critics. However, there are doubtless legions of fans who weren't even around in 1968 who would be willing to swing anywhere with Mark Wahlberg, "Marky Mark." And this is as good a place as any.
Wahlberg is the astronaut Leo who lands guess where? And is surrounded by guess whom?
Director Tim Burton gives it his best, but it's not up to "Edward Sissorhands" or "Batman" in the fantasist's special effects department. One critic says the "biggest apes of all, the studio executives, must have stepped in" and stolen Burton's thunder.
The movie also stars Tim Roth and Helena Bonham Carter, neither of whom is hard to look at, either, except for all that fur.
It is rated PG-13 and is two hours long.
It is playing at Sunny Isle Theaters.
