Oct. 15, 2001 – As part of National Red Ribbon Week, Evelyn Williams Elementary School invites parents and community members to join the annual Drug Free March on Wednesday, starting at 10 a.m.
The administration, faculty, staff and students of the school will take part, principal Janette Bass said in a release from the V.I. Education Department. The march will begin at the school and proceed to the bus shanty on Queen Mary Highway, where a drug free rally will take place.
National Red Ribbon Week was established by Executive Order 6210 in 1990. Use of the red ribbon as a symbol began earlier when a U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration agent, Enrique Camarena, was abducted and killed while investigating a large drug scam in 1985, according to the Internet site Keystone Hall. The National Federation of Parents, Inc., sponsored the first nationwide campaign that first year.
