Nov 28, 2001- "Friday Night Alternative" house musician Sally Smith has a new monicker — "Sunshine Sally," as opposed to "Mustang Sally," her nickname with the Sax Cymbals band.
That works. The weekly live music get-togethers on the Marlin Deck outside The Color of Joy in American Yacht Harbor get under way just about the time the winter-season sun is setting over Red Hook. The event runs from 6 to 8 p.m. and also features complimentary wine and snacks and the opportunity to peruse the Color of Joy gallery and boutique offerings after hours.
With Smith as anchor, it's open-mike music for the most part, with some sit-ins rapidly developing into regulars. Guitarist/singer Marty Iorio was a hit last week, as was drummer Seb Bartolotta, also known as "Mr. B," who's expected back this Friday.
As a special added attraction this week, a drawing will be held to determine the winner of a raffle that's been going on all month. The prize is a patriotic-theme moko jumbie soft sculpture by local artist Jane Ryan-Clemo, and the proceeds will go to assist victims of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and their families.
And, Color of Joy owner Corinne Van Rensselaer reports, there's going to be more than the usual cheese and crackers to accompany the wine: Friends and neighbors Kathy and Fred Zeller of the XO wine bar across the street will be providing some hors d'oeuvres.
Plus, "the Rotary Club of St. Thomas will be joining us on the deck for their fellowship gathering," Van Rensselaer says. The public is welcome, and it's a convenient stop on the way for those heading over to St. John. For more information, call 775-4020.
