CARDOW GIVES $30K TO 'HELPING HANDS' FUND

Dec. 11, 2001 – In a ceremony at Government House on St. Thomas, William Dowling, president of Cardow Jewelers, presented a check for $30,000 to Operation Helping Hands, the governor's initiative to raise funds from Virgin Islanders for victims of the Sept. 11 attacks and their families.
The jewelry store contribution consisted of donations made by Cardow employees plus 10 percent of sales during a period in the aftermath of the terrorist attacks, according to a Government House release.
Gov. Charles W. Turnbull set $100,000 — or roughly $1 per resident — as the goal for Operation Helping Hands. With the funds raised at a telethon and money collected by firefighters and other government agencies, that goal has nearly been reached, the release stated.
St. Croix Administrator Gregory Francis, who is in charge of the fund drive, joined Turnbull on St. Thomas for the check presentation.
