Jan. 31, 2002 – February is assured of a friendly send-in at this weekend's "Friday Night Alternative," which will feature an extra added attraction to kick off the month for celebrating black history, romance and other reasons to say "I love you."
Live music will still be at the top of the bill, with house musicians Sally Smith on keyboard and vocals and "Mr. B." on drums anchoring whoever else drops by. (Last week's guest artists included saxophonist George Thompson, guitarist Rob Jones and Donna Lange, who sings and plays variations on the pennywhistle plus guitar.)
But there'll also be an art sale going on.
"We are starting the month by cleaning out my studio and storage," Color of Joy gallery/boutique owner and "Alternative" organizer Corinne Van Rensselaer says. "We have found all sorts of paintings and prints that could be your treasures!" There is so much, in fact, that they're calling off the usual kids' video showing this weekend only "as we will be using that space to sell stuff!"
Otherwise, things will be as normal as they get for an "Alternative" evening on the broad Marlin Deck outside of The Color of Joy at American Yacht Harbor: Sunset and moonrise over the harbor; complimentary wine, cheese and crackers; T-shirts and raffle tickets for sale; and plenty of time to chat with old friends and new. Hours are 6 to 8 p.m.
P.S. — Van Rensselaer also notes that "Alternative" photographer Greg Miller has plans to exhibit his camera art on St. John at The Colors of Black and White, a new gallery opening soon next to his office (BGM Engineers & Surveyors) in the Lumberyard complex.
