Feb. 11, 2002 — Gunfire left one man dead and another wounded in two incidents over the weekend on St. Croix.
At about 2 a.m. Saturday, 47-year-old Ray Seeles was fatally shot in the upper body by an unknown assailant. Seeles was shot at the FNA Service Station across from the Sunny Isle Shopping Center, according to a report in the St. Croix Avis. He was pronounced dead at about 3 a.m. at Juan F. Luis Hospital, less than five minutes away from the site.
Also at Sunny Isle on Saturday, 30-year-old George Bridgewater was wounded in the neck by a bullet. According to published reports, Bridgewater was fastening his 4-month-old child into a car seat near Junior's Jewelry at about 7:15 p.m. when shots rang out in the parking lot of the busy shopping center. Police said the shots appeared to be random.
Bridgewater, who was hit in the neck, attempted to drive himself to the nearby hospital but did not make it out of the shopping center. An ambulance took him the rest of the way.
The infant was not injured.
Police said they had no motive in either shooting. In Bridgewater's case, it was not known whether he was the intended target or if he was hit inadvertently. It also was unclear whether the two shootings incidents were related.
There were witnesses to both shootings, according to police, but none have come forward with information.
Seeles's murder was the second on St. Croix this year and the fifth in the territory.
