POETRY BEING ADDED TO 'ALTERNATIVE' LINEUP

0

Feb. 13, 2002- As promised, there'll be more than the usual music, wine, cheese, art and socializing at this weekend's "Friday Night Alternative" gathering at American Yacht Harbor on St. Thomas. For the first — but definitely not the last — time, there will be poetry, too.
Musician/songwriter Donna Lange will be the evening's host, with musical backup by steelpan one-man band Morgan Rael. Sax man Jules Phillips has pledged to put in an appearance, and there will be "others, I am sure!" organizer Corinne Van Rensselaer says.
But poets and those who would like to read others' poetry will be the featured attraction. There's no need to sign up ahead of time, but Lange will be keeping a list Friday night, just to keep track of who's there to participate and to make sure that everyone wanting to read gets a chance to do so.
It all happens on the broad Marlin Deck outside of Van Rensselaer's Color of Joy gallery and boutique, where the "spring cleaning" art sale will still be going on, too. "Friday Night Alternative" T-shirts will be on sale as usual, as will tickets for this month's raffle of a work of art, with proceeds to help keep the weekly happenings happening.
Van Rensselaer also notes that photographer Greg Miller, whose work is featured in her gallery, will be opening his own exhibition space on St. John next week. Called "The Colors of Black and White," the locale is next to his office, BGM Engineers & Surveyors, in the Lumberyard complex in Cruz Bay.
"Friday Night Alternative" hours are 6 to 8 p.m. The Red Hook event takes place just a few minutes' walk from the ferry dock, making it a convenient stop for folks heading from St. Thomas to St. John at the end of the week/start of the weekend. For more information, call 775-4020.
