20TH CARNIVAL MILE SETS RECORD TIME & NUMBERS

0

April 28, 2002 – A record number of 150 runners, joggers, walkers, and even some babies in strollers, from the age of one to 70-plus, came up Main Street at 7:30 a.m. Saturday in the St. Thomas Association of Roadrunners (STAR) 20th annual Carnival Mile.
Ruth Ann David of St. Thomas ran with the top men and posted a new women's course record of 5 minutes 33 seconds, taking 15 seconds off the previous mark of 5:48 set by sisters Ziamara and Evelise Gomez of St. Croix in 1997 and 1998, respectively. This was David's second Carnival Mile title, her previous victory coming in 2000. She was well ahead of distance specialist Kim Fitzpatrick, who finished second in 6:10.
In the men's division Maurice Kurg won in a time of 5:15, holding off Michael Hughes, who finished 3 seconds behind.
The race has changed since STAR introduced it for Carnival 1983, from a primarily adult race to one where youth outnumber all other categories. Families participate in ever increasing numbers, and schools register as groups to increase the enthusiasm and friendly competition provided by this pre-Adult Parade tradition.
Madison Van Heurck defended his last year's victory in the 12 & under age group, winning in a time of 6:06. He cut 20 seconds off his 2001 time.
Earthla Arthur, a 1995 race winner, won the women's 40-49 division.
Frank Jackson, a top finisher in the 40-49 age group during the past several years, entered the 50 & over category with a win in 6:07.
Tyfia Lee, last year's women's winner, won the 13-19 age group, and her sisters Tynequa and Tykela were 1st and 3rd respectively in the women's 12 and under category.
The race proceeds will go to the St. Thomas-St. John Chapter of the American Red Cross.
Sponsorship was provided by Seaborne Airlines with support from Powerade and Dasani Water, and awards for the winners were presented by Movado Watch Co.
MEN'S OVERALL WINNER: Maurice Kurg, 5:15.
