EXECUTIVE DONATES 20 COMPUTERS FOR KIDS TO USE

May 8, 2002 – Mary Phillips, Charlotte Amalie High School librarian, said the school's library computer system was good before Tuesday, "but now it's great."
Speaking Wednesday morning, Phillips praised the eight new Gateway computers CAHS received Tuesday, a gift from a St. Croix corporate executive that was coordinated through the office of Sen. Norma Pickard-Samuel.
The library already had 10 Apple computers, Phillips said, "but they aren't compatible with Microsoft. Lots of students have Microsoft at home, and we weren't compatible with them — they had to go somewhere else to print anything. Now, their ability to use all the systems is greatly increased."
She added, "It was a great donation. We really appreciate it."
Joseph Fergus, a Navy veteran living on St. Croix, donated a total of 20 of the computers, and Pickard-Samuel personally delivered those for St. Thomas on Tuesday. Fergus is the chief executive of Com Tek Communications Technology, located in Chantilly, Virginia.
Along with the eight computers for CAHS, there were another eight for Ivanna Eudora Kean High School, one for the Alvin McBean Community Center after-school program, and three for the St. Croix Boys and Girls Club.
"These computers are very necessary for our children, and they are top of the line," Pickard-Samuel said. "As a result of this very generous donation, our children will finally have adequate computers to do their work."
She expressed gratitude to Fergus, calling him "an outstanding example of what a community-minded person should be." She said government officials "must tap into the resources of our private sector. They have a lot to offer and can be very helpful to us in cases of where the government resources fall short."
