May 11, 2002 – The Hebrew Congregation of St. Thomas, which hosts an annual antiques auction to raise funds for the maintenance of its historic synagogue, is currently holding a special online silent auction to take advantage of a donation it recently received.
The item is a large 19th century "copper," a container once used in the making of sugar, molasses and rum. It was a gift to the congregation from the estate of Amalie Mylner.
West Indian antiques authority Philip Sturm describes the item thus: "Large Copper, c. 5' diameter and 2' tall, with four protruding handles, originally used in sugar production, c. 1870-80."
Arrangements to view the copper can be made by calling the synagogue at 774-4312. Bids will be accepted by e-mail or telephone until 5 p.m. Monday. The e-mail address is [email protected]. The winning bidder will be notified on Tuesday and is asked to move the copper from the Mylner estate, above Fort Mylner, by Wednesday or to make arrangements to do so as soon thereafter as possible.
