CALLIX CRABBE IS MILWAUKEE BREWERS' DRAFT PICK

0

June 6, 2002 – The Milwaukee Brewers picked 1990s St. Thomas high school baseball standout Callix S. Crabbe on Tuesday in the 12th round of the 2002 Major League amateur baseball draft.
Two years ago, Crabbe, a second baseman, was picked by the Atlanta Braves in the 32nd round of the 2000 draft. At the time, he had just graduated from Stone Mountain High School in Georgia, and instead of signing with the Braves, he chose to enroll in Manatee Community College on Florida's West Coast.
He went from the 970th selection in the 2000 draft to the 349th this year.
Crabbe was the Charlotte Amalie High School starting shortstop during his freshman and sophomore years. He led the Chicken Hawks to the Interscholastic Athletic Association varsity baseball championships both years.
He also led the Elrod Hendricks West Little League to the Virgin Islands championship in 1994 and 1995 and represented the Virgin Islands in the Latin American Little League tournaments both of those years.
Crabbe gives a lot of credit to his coaches on St. Thomas. "They always told me to keep my head up and continue to play hard," he said.
He thinks that he is better prepared now than he was two years ago. "In 2000, I was slower, so I have been working on my speed," he said. "I have also worked on my mechanic and lost some weight."
If Crabbe decides to sign with Milwaukee, he will report to the Brewers' rookie team in the Pioneer League, the Ogden Raptors, in Ogden, Utah.
