Oct. 12, 2002 – The University of the Virgin Islands St. Croix chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society won "The Best Membership Drive Award" at the 2002 Golden Key International Convention, held in August in Atlanta, Ga.
This award is presented to the Golden Key chapter that has attained the highest new-member response rate within a specific membership category. Last year the chapter achieved a 73 percent response rate.
"UVI's St. Croix chapter of the Golden Key International Honour Society exemplifies what 'world class' leadership really means. These students not only excel among their local peers, but they also stand out on the world’s stage," said chapter advisor Miriam Osborne-Elliott, who is also the counseling and placement supervisor on the St. Croix campus. "Advising this group has been one of the highlights of my service to the institution."
Osborne-Elliott said that receiving the award seemed like déjà vu, since the chapter has won several awards in past years, winning in this same category.
Two advisers and four UVI students received the award in front of 1,200 delegates from around the world who attended the awards luncheon. Competing for the award were 42 other chapters from seven countries.
Prof. Francisco Depusoir is co-adviser of the St. Croix chapter.
The Golden Key International Honour Society provides academic recognition to college juniors and seniors in the top 15 percent of their class, along with leadership opportunities, community service, career networking and scholarships.
